Respirocytes are artificial red blood cells. In fact, they are nanomachines, tiny mechanical devices designed to operate on the molecular level. Each respirocyte is between 0.2 and 2 microns in diameter. Respirocytes function as artificial red blood cells by carrying oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules through the body. In the future, they could serve as a universal blood substitute, preserve living tissue, eliminate "the bends," allow for new sports records, and provide treatment for anemia, choking, lung diseases, asphyxia, and other respiratory problems.
