'Normal' light bulbs contains a very thin piece of metal, called a tungsten filament, that glows when an electric current is passed through it (when you switch the light on). Over time the expansion due to heating, and contraction as it cools down, makes the filament more brittle and it eventually breaks. This means the circuit cannot be completed and so the bulb stop working.

Because the light bulb realises that its been played around with by some jerk and decides to stop working.
