Rope-yarn Sunday is any day except Sunday that is set aside for washing, mending, and making of clothes. It was used as late as 1975, or later, but I was on the USS Albany (CG-10), from '71-'75 and I know it was Wednesday that was set aside, at least in my ASROC division. I dont know about other commands. I think by that time it was pretty much up to each command as to whether or not Rope-yarn Sunday was even used.

At sea aboard sailing ships, one afternoon a week was reserved for mending of clothes, hammocks, etc.. Rope yarn was the material used. Because it was relief from the usual duties, much like Sunday, that afternoon was dubbed "rope yarn Sunday". Hope this helps...
