Help answer this question below.
most of the donated organs come from people who have suffered brain death because of injury or a neuro-vascular defect. When the transplant team goes to the hospital to retrieve the organ, it is visually examined and some other tests are done on the organ and blood to determine it will be a good viable organ.
It depends on which organ you are talking about.
For different organs or tissues, the recovery time is different. It also is dependent on the health of the individual at the time of the transplant.
For liver transplants, most of the donated organs come from people who have suffered brain death because of injury or a neuro-vascular defect. When the transplant team goes to the hospital to retrieve the organ, it is visually examined and some other tests are done on the organ and blood to determine it will be a good viable organ. Their is a prescreening process done by blood type to notify the potential recepient to proceed to the hospital where the transplant will take place. There is a potential for large blood loss in liver transplants.
After the transplant, the person will be in the ICU, depending on their previous health before transplant, and this will generally dictate how long they will be in the ICU. Medications are generally started before the transplant to suppress the immune system so your body won't reject the new organ. The recovery time is dependent on your health before the transplant, your risk of infection from the surgery itself, your immune system will be depressed because of the drugs, so the staff at the hospital will need to be careful not to give you an infection. Post-operative bleeding can be a complication. The liver helps make many of the blood protiens which help in the formation of a clot. The new liver function will be checked by daily blood test to determine it is functioning. If it is functioning, the new liver should make the proteins for forming the clot. Your old liver was probably NOT making the proteins or a sufficient amount of the protiens and you probably had a bleeding disorder.
I'm not sure you were wanting to know about Liver Transplant or Kidney or what organ. Please specify and a better answer for the organ specific transplant.
