Should women who hit their men get the same penalty for domestic violence as men do?

Of course. And by the way, emotional abuse is very bad too. And 24% of women emotionally abuse their husbands. That's almost the same number of men who abuse their wives.--25%.

This is the big secret which only now is being uncovered. Men are more ashamed than women to admit that they are being abused. -- and it's not aways emotional abuse.

However, I am not sure the penalty should be the same because the situation isn't the same. Nobody should ever be hit, that is not disputed. However, I look at me and my wife. If she were to hit me, she couldn't hurt me and I would not be in fear in any way. That is not the case if it were reverse. - There are plenty of women who use frying pans and knives and it is far more common than one would like to believe. I don't know a huge number of people, and even so I know of two women who stabbed their husbands, two women who drove their husbands to attempted suicide and one woman who drove her husband to commit suicide and I am sure that there are many other incidents that go on behind closed doors that we are unaware of. Women should be held accountable.

- It's the act of physical violence that needs to be punished. I know of plenty of men who would be in trouble if their wife started hitting them, especially if they didn't defend themselves. So many men are falsely imprisoned just because their woman lied about being abused, and it was his word versus hers. There is a HUGE double standard in life between women and men, yet women want to be "equal." That doesn't fly with me. They can't have their cake, and eat it too. If people who get in a fight, regardless whether or not they started it, get arrested, so should a woman for hitting someone who is not going to hit them back.

- A woman with a knife can do bodily harm to a man just the same as a man can do to a woman. If the INTENT is there to hurt, the ability is already there. The problem with what you are saying is that if a man wants to hurt a woman, he can do it, if a woman wants to hurt a man, she will do it. Sure, the punch might not be as hard, but that doesn't mean in ANY way that there should be less punishment, because it's the INTENT that matters.

- There's also a difference there. Any gold glove boxer will get an AGGRAVATED assault charge because they are told ahead of time that they can not fight in public because of how good their skills are. The law sees their hands as weapons yes, so they will get an aggravated assault charge instead of just an assault charge.

Definitely. No one has the right to lay a finger on anyone else, in anger. There is no excuse for women to abuse men, just as there's no excuse for men to abuse women.

- I agree. nobody should hit anybody. As I mentioned though, it isn't quite the same thing when girls do the hitting. So I am not sure that the penalty should be the same.

  I know of a case where the woman is about 5'3" and weighs about 120-lbs. Her hubby is 5'8" and weighs about 300-lbs. He doesn't hit her, but she does hit him and she has hurt him. Thankfully, he is doing his best to stand up to her (she is his bully) and he has allowed this for years because he was very embarrassed.
  
  He has been victimized by her both physically and psychologically.

  If I were the type to hit people, I should still be punished the same. Maybe I can't hurt the type of guy I date, but if I were hitting him I would be TRYING to do as much damage as possible.

- However weak she may be, she still can do some kind of damage. Even if it's just a bruise or a scratch, it is still an attack. I date guys that weigh more than 100lbs more than me and I don't think it would be nice to hit them. I think I should be punished the same way they would be if they hit me.
  
  BTW, scratches can leave permanent scars--I have a patient that has them on his face from an ex.

I am very much in favor of equal rights but domestic violence with all due respect to women is one area where men get the shaft (child custody is the other) I had a friend who was frequently hit by his wife time after time, sometimes with her fists, sometimes with other objects and often caused him bruises and injuries. Finally, during a particularly vicious attack, he defended himself and laid his hands on her once to get her off of him. She of course called the police, he got in trouble, and for years had to deal with being calling him a wife beater when it was the other way around. By the way she also had a weight advantage on him. A man should not strike a woman, but a woman should never strike a man and if she continues to attack him he does have a right to defend himself.

Yes, you shouldnt hit, either way. Just because we are the weaker sex, is no excuse, there are a lot of men that wont defend their selves because they are taught not to hit women, and I have seen women take advantage of it..

Yes. And it is also an unwise stereotype to assume that just because a woman is typically smaller in stature that she can't muster incredible strength to inflict pain, suffering or damage. Just ask John Bobbitt.

- Thank you, I hate this double standard more than any other in society. I do however feel there is a difference because of the intimidation factor. I understand women use weapons, but then it is a different thing; Assault with a deadly weapon. Also, if I beat somebody up I get a penalty, but a boxer would get a harsher one because his hands are a lethal weapon.

- Well, I supposed it is weighed in the manner of intent. I mean, could a boxer properly restrain his punch enough to make it NOT be a lethal weapon? But likewise, I'm sure there are plenty of individuals strong enough to cause equal damage as a professional boxer that don't happen to have that stigma hanging over them. This might come as a shock to some people coming from someone who has been abused by men in the past (thank God not now), but yes they should. And I also think that adult women who molest children should get the same penalty as men. Frankly, I think women who commit ANY crime should have the same penalty as men.

Of course they should. The problem lies in the fact that too many men will not turn them in because they don't want to be seen as wimps, which is rediculous. The other problem is that sometimes in an attempt to stop the woman they may actually accidently do something that the woman will turn around and claim against them then it's just down hill from there. - There are a lot of women though that can yield a knife or other object and hurt you a lot worse. Just because women are typically smaller doesn't mean they can't cause damage or harm you in even minor ways. Remember Lorana Bobbit? I know plenty of guys that get hit on and if a man did it to the women they would be in jail. There is def. a double standard, but there shouldn't be. Sometimes a mans fist would be nicer then what an angry woman could do. It just depends, I know I could hurt my husband and he is bigger and stronger but I could still hurt him if I ever wanted to.

- And women sometimes abuse the "gentlemenly" treatment that men give them, taking advantage of being spoiled by chivalry, and think they can hit without being hit back. That is sad. And that is why a lot of men these days don't act like gentlemen anymore. They think "Why the hell should I act like a gentleman if she doesn't act like a lady?" Most women are physically weaker than men,therefore causing bodily harm to men is over exaggerated.Men in the first place should try to avoid such confrontation from happening.They must be able to have control over such situation by not provoking the ladies.Leaving the quarrel spot for that moment will be a good solution to avoid violence. I therefore disagree that women should get the same penalty as men do;as the fault lies usually on the men for not being able to control situation.Men should play their role as leaders of their respective houses and families.

- At the moment are you experiencing double standard for the law on domestic violence in your country.Of course who ever breaks the law should be accountable however my opinion rest on why should the lady be provoked in the first place.Man should play the role as a caring husband.He should avoid violence from happening as he has the capacity to avoid. - I could not disagre more, women are more than capable of causing men harm. There are cases where women are stronger (not as often as men of course but it happens), sometimes a weapon is used which could hurt anyone. If we are all equal, we should have to operate under the same rules. When you strike your husband you have committed a crime. If a woman murders a man is it less of a crime then when a women murders the man? That is insane, human life is human life.

I know of a case where the woman is about 5'3" and weighs about 120-lbs. Her hubby is 5'8" and weighs about 300-lbs. He doesn't hit her, but she does hit him and she has hurt him. Thankfully, he is doing his best to stand up to her (she is his bully) and he has allowed this for years because he was very embarrassed.

He has been victimized by her both physically and psychologically.

I think that the punishments should be the same.

If the physical violence is coming from the man or from the woman, the consequences should be the same. Either we live in a society that measures out equal justice or we don't. Either all domestic violence is wrong or it is not.

- I respectfully disagree; you assume that the woman is unable to hurt a man because she is supposedly the weaker sex. Domestic violence is about control, rage, and lack of mutual respect. You don't have to be physically strong to hurt another person. I am not afraid of my wife but I will not tolerate her putting her hands on me. If she wants me to respect her then the respect has to be mutual. All it takes is one act of rage and she or any woman can hurt her male partner. Anyone who raises their hand in domestic violence should receive the same consequences. You and I will have to agree to disagree on this topic.

Ive seen a woman get comepletely off the hook after hitting her s/o with a glass statue.Huge pool of blood.stitches,concussion.his face was black blue and swollen for weeks.she was arrested gieven to the MP's(military) and let off with nothing.Total bs.

- well my teacher was repeatedly beaten before his wife went to jail. I agree that its not always the same situation but for the most part it is. Trust me there are some tough girls out there my old cco for example was the toughest girl in our company. Made pt look like a cake walk...

They most certainly should and they should be prosecuted for emotional and psychological abuse as well and exposing their children to it. I am a woman, but I have seen one woman drive her partner to suicide, having broken up his marriage and ruined his business, and another woman drive her husband to attempt to commit suicide. Both of these women lie, manipulate and deceive as a way of life. The second woman was psychologically abusive to her husband and continuously ran him down to everyone even though he supplied her with every material thing that her and her children needed. Interestingly, the second woman's daughter is just like her mother.

i know this will make me sound really ignorant but living in a society where we have (supposed) equality drilled into us from childhood i have already assumed women get the same penalty for committing domestic violence as men. as you are asking this question there are two things worrying me-

1. that the law does not treat the same crime equally
2. that you possibly do not agree

i hope i'm wrong and i will look into the 1st one in more detail. someone here has already stated how important intent is. if you genuinely intend to harm someone- not just 'she cheated i wanna kill her- but you're seriously wrong in the head and you are intending to be a wife/husband beater then you belong behind bars (duration is irrelevant if male/female)

The penalty for each should depend on the amount of physical damage that was done and the frequency of assault. Given that most women are not as strong as most men, the average amount of damage is also less.

It is sometime hard to tell who is assaulting and who is defending themselves. If one party is menacing the other , sometimes the first hitter is practicing self-defence.

- Yes it's a huge problem that is swept under the rug. Most ppl don't turn it in because it's deemed as being a wussy, that is just idiotic. Women can be a lot meaner then men, usually it's more mental which in my experience is worse. I would rather be punched by a 200 lb. man any day then have someone mentally or emotionally abuse me again, and I grew up with both.

- It is sad. Physically abuse can be seen, but too often the others go unnoticed and they are the ones that can really be damaging. I have a hard time seeing kids like this and wish I could help more, but these darn govt child protective services don't do what needs to be done, and they have every excuse to ignore what is going on. Did you hear about the case where they were supposed to remove a child one night and decided to wait until morning, the girl was found dead the next morning. Sad ppl can't and won't do their jobs.

Yes.And they do, here where I live. If the man is abused he has just the same right to lay charges on her and they will go forward to the justice system. Trouble is, few men will lay charges as it takes a lot of courage to face up to family and friends who, he believes, will perceive him as 'weak'. Too bad....because it happens far more often than is reported.

Absoe-fuckin-lutly. Sorry, I'm just extremelly passionate about this subject. I ranted about this on another question, but cant remember what. Anywho, if women want to be equal, then why would one demand better treatment? Its always annoyed me. If I were to give you a shot to the mouth I would deserve the same. If you were to beat the shit outa me, then I you, both charges should be the same. The few times I've gotten so angry I hit my s/o he hit back, equally as hard and it hurt. Did I complain? Nope. Except I am the one with the raging temper.
