  • What instrument does Yo Yo Ma (sp?) play? Whatever it is, I choose him! :)
  • There are many reasons why violinists would choose to play viola. First of all, while competition for violin seats in orchestras of all levels can be super competitive, there is often a shortage of violas. In general, the atmosphere among violists is less cutthroat. In professional orchestras, a violist is more likely to get a job than a violinist of the same level. Also factored in is sound preference. Some people find the shrill tones of the E-string on a violin very grating, and prefer the deeper, mellower tones of the viola. Most higher-level violinists have played some iola simply for the experience with a slightly different instrument and very different clef. Personally, I played viola in a few orchestras for about a year, and I much prefer violin; I think the violin is a more versatile instrument, and I like the competition. My sister on the other hand, has been playing violin for about seven years now and is seriously considering switching to viola permanently, for exactly the reasons listed above.
  • because for some reason, violins seem kind of girly, in a way. Violas do, too, but not as much as a high-pitched, 4 (or 7) stringed, puny little instrument. No offense to anyone- just my opinion.
  • I just love the sound of a viola. The deepness and richness of it is amazing.
  • I would definitely choose the violin over the viola. Its such a beautiful instrument and I love the music it makes! =]
