Why do we need a minimum drinking age when Italy can do just fine without one?

I know! I think they should at least lower the drinking age to 13. In my opinion, teen-agers who can't drive yet deserve to be drinking more than some adults. Because, at least they aren't drinking and driving at age 13. (unless they steal a care and drive without a license of course.) But if they're driving a car, and they're under age, then even without being drunk, they probably will hit somebody. Simply because of the lack of experience.

we are not italy or a bunch of dumb hicks. they control their kids i'm sure. kids over here are undisciplined and have no respect for anything that could kill them or others

A psychological study of Italians and their attitude toward alcohol showed that Italians think of their vino primarily as a beverage, not as a drug. This gave them (at the time of the study; may have changed) the lowest rate of alcoholism in continental Europe. (Iceland's was even lower.) The same study showed that the French seemed to think of it as a drug first, beverage second, and they had the highest rate in Western Europe.
