Why are so many years needed to become a medical surgeon? Just what are you learning for 5+ years?

Everything. And practicing... Let me put it this way... Would YOU want an inexperience surgeon performing on YOU, or one who had had a a couple of years experience. They learn MANY of the aspects of the medical profession, too... Watch ER... Most doctors, now-a-days, specialize in a given area... Podiatric surgery - Feet and ankles... Orthopaedic - musculo-skeletal, and sub-specialties in legs, knees, hands, etc. ..., neuro - brain, etc. Heck... My cousin specializes in the connection between the eyes and the brain. They become virtual experts in their fields. ... It takes a while!

Different nations require different lengths of study time. Not all require 5+ years to become a surgeon.
