Ok, now that some of the other answers filled you in on challenge coins, another way to get them is to simply go to an air show. Some of the aircrews will sell or even give them away. Keep in mind, the best coins are not sold nor given to civilians.
As far as challenging someone, DONT! You'll just get laughed at by most military members today. The use of a challenge coin (to actually challenge someone) is a dying tradition in the new school military. Some still keep the tradition. I still carry my Airmen's coin in my wallet after 8 years in so far, but have only been challenged once. However, collecting them is still big.

You need to visit a base, walk into a unit, and most of them will sell them to you. The thing is getting on the base. You need to have a valid reason. I got mine while doing computer installs on a few bases. And I've actually used them in challenges.
