  • I don't know what stores you are using, but I have never been asked that!
  • Sounds like the system Sears uses or at least similar to it. Phone numbers are how Sears stores your purchase records. If you lose a reciept, and need to return a product, they can look up the record and print you a new one to issue refunds. You can ask that the mumber not be used for marketing and they have to respect your request. You can also give them a phony. The cashier's don't care and if you need a reciept in the future, just give them the phony number.
  • Radio shack asks for your phone number as does Kmart. i figured it was a marketing tool to see where the people that shop in those stores live.
  • Maybe they fancy you rotten and want to phone you at strange hours then haunt your every waking moment in a Fatal Attractionesque pastiche. I don't think I'll be passing out my number to some weirdo working on a till, thanks.
  • Asking for your phone number is just another security check for the business. people steal merchandise and bring it back to the store for a refund. if you do not have a store receipt and you do not know your phone number, then a refund is denied. Like i said, its a security tool for the business to protect loss of property, by larcency and fraud.
