No- when I got hired at my current job they hired me on the spot at the interview, they never even checked my references.

Not always, but most of the time.

Not always. It depends on the state. Here in CA there have been so many court cases involving references and defamation of character that we are only allowed to confirm or deny someone's work dates. So checking references is rather uninformative here.

You can not say negative comments to a future employer, only confirm the dates of employment.
