  • we're all wondering the same thing around here. SOMEONE in the know, please answer! dying of curiosity
  • Nah. I was dying to know too...now I do. "As for the rubber bands just above the elbows. It's actually a thin sweat band made of terry cloth. Curious about it myself, I obtained a pair from an equipment manager after a game last year. It's actually very loosely fit, and surprisingly effective. It cuts off the sweat before it can reach that point. Yes.... I'm certain there is a fashion statement there because they all have their respective adidas and nike decals on them. So... it's the "in thing" for now." Mark Ewing Copied from website by Mark Ewing
  • Answer: Bands that are worn the wrist are for sweating, however most all football players, tennis players etc; will wear tight bands around their elbows because the tendons of the elbow slowly and painfully begin to pull away from the bone of the elbow during stress. This is where the pain in your elbow originates. With continued repetitive use of the elbow, the tendon-bone connection continues to weaken and the pain in your elbow steadily increases. By placing continual pressure on the tendons connecting the Flexor and the Extensor muscles to the Medial and Lateral Epicondyles, thus significantly reducing the tension at the point of connection to the bone. Reduceing the stress on the Tendinitis,
  • They are not for sweat, that is a great mis-conception. A great majority are made of latex rubber which is quite the opposite of a sweat band. Also they are not made to slide like a terry cloth sweat band would. In actuality, the bands were originally being worn under recommendation of the sports medicine teams for both NFL & Big 10 schools about 10 years ago in aid to help prevent tendinitis. It never actually worked effectively for that because the bands would need to be applied very tight almost like a tourniquet to provide counter-traction and prevent inflammation. So they were then discontinued. However, during their use, as more and more of the players began to wear them, they actually became a focal point for the quarterback to see the receivers arms. So coaches began advising their use again. If you observe closely, you will see that it is mostly the offensive receivers that wear them now as focal points. Plus they are now the "in-thing" like tattoo'd biceps so a lot of it is just for show these days.
