When you are driving long distances and begin to feel extremely drowsy (you're on the interstate and can't stop till the exit) do you ever find yourself driving extremly fast to "get there before you fall asleep"?

I used to drive proffessionaly anywhere from twelve to eighteen hours at a time. Only Cars and small trucks. This began to happen to me unconsiously. Especially at night. About twenty years ago I was on a route and found that twenty miles through the mountains was suddenly behind me and I didn't remember any of it. Pretty scarey! It's many years later now and I don't drive long distances very often anymore, but it still amazes me that after all this time a four hour drive still seems like a quick jaunt. The fatigue can sneak up without warning though, so I simply stop often and stretch just to see how awake I really am.

I believe that any auto driver is somewhat guilty of this. My reason to believe this is that many of us who travel want to make trips shorter and regardless when we are trapped in a car for an excessive amount of time driving to our destination we tend to become tired and not even realize in reality that just driving a car quite a distance makes us extremely tired and exhausted, with this in mind we tend to drive more quickly in the hope that we will reach our destination more quickly so we do not fall asleep and we get there more quickly. I can relate to this question quite well as I travel lots 5.5 hours to get to college and travel home on some weekends so I tend to become highly tired and rush at a rapid speed in hope that I will make it more quickly. But realisticly its not the safest thing to do, not only are we putting ourselves at danger but other innocent people as well, and its not like we are doing it intentionally.
