I dyed my hair what I thought was to medium brown and ended up with jet black hair. The next day I tried a lighter shade of brown with no luck. Does anyone have any tips as to how I can lighten it up at home?

Stop coloring your hair now! If it is permanent color, you are lucky it is still on your head. I actually dyed my own hair to save some money and it also came out way too dark. I am just using a shampoo with citric acid in the ingredients for now, Prell, or a shampoo that is not for colored hair to help lighten it up. I also inquired at my hair salon and they told me in a few weeks they can try a High Lift "Highlight" that DOES NOT CONTAIN BLEACH. It will lighten the areas of my hair that got brownish/black to more of a sable brown. It is done like a Highlight on strands of hair. So that might work for you too to give your hair some constrast so it doesn't look so black and harsh to your skin tone. Good Luck to both of us!

Oh lord. Do not try to bleach this out at home.

Try washing your hair with dish soap, the detergent is much harsher than shampoo and will help to lighten the color. You can also use John Freida's Blonde Highlight Activating shampoo because it contains citric acid and will remove some of the color.

If that doesn't work, you can have the color removed at a hair salon. You could also have your hair highlighted, giving the illusion of an all over lighter color.

Color removal should really only be done by professionals. It's a difficult process and can come out terrible if done incorrectly.

I believe that you are going to have to get it the color you are looking for gradually . Each time you will have to dye it a shade lighter and it will be like a step by step process. Anotherwards if its jet black now, you will have to go to a lighter shade of black, then to a darker brown, then to a slighty lighter shade of brown, etc. Just remember to give your hair a break in between dyeing it as dyeing it can dry your hair out so always condition well and take care of your hair especially the roots. Good Luck.
