Here's the deal: Answerbag is all about "frequently-asked" questions. Most frequently asked questions are pretty short - if I let the questions get too long, they'll be very hard to browse, and we'll end up with people telling their life stories just to ask simple questions. So, we limit the question to encourage people to be concise and to the point. We may lose some valid questions this way, but most "frequently-asked" questions should be able to phrased within this limit.

99.9% of the time questions can be worded to fit that. The other .1% of the time is when you need to rephrase and let people know details are in an answer. People who ramble on and just leave it cut off bug me. >.< You should have seen that it was cut off, why didn't you fix it?!

I think it's enough. I believe it is designed so that we make our questions more concise.
-
I don't think so! I've been forced to reword some of my questions!

I don't think it is. Most questions fit easily into that, but more complicated questions don't, and sometimes rephrasing makes it harder to make your point clear. I wouldn't say questions space should be doubled or unlimited, but another 50 or 60 characters would be very helpful at times.

Yes. I've had questions which have exceeded the character limit and I've had to either 1) not submit them or 2) shorten them and make them more concise, even adding further details in comments if an answer prompts it. Allowing a larger character limit will generally make AB more verbose and its content less clear. For the most part, questions can be shortened considerably, it just seems trendy these days to put details which aren't very relevant or necessary in them, or even to add a sentence apologising for asking the question and other odd quirks!

I often find there isn't nearly enough detail in questions to form a helpful answer. When that happens, sometimes I'll post an answer asking people to provide more details. It's tough to get your question concise, especially if it's some practical personal problem as opposed to an open ended generality (e.g. "what is the meaning of life?" is a lot shorter than "I have this problem with a coworker who borrowed my girlfriend and brought her back damaged...") I think the max length should be increased, but the display on the main page, etc., should be limited to just the first 256 characters. That would allow people who are interested to "drill down" into the rest of the question text, without imposing it on everyone who reviews the main page(s).

For some people yes, for others no. For those people they need to shorten their questions or not put in so much details.

I've seen some questions that either run out and the asker doesn't notice, or they start using short forms and no punctuation in order to fit the question, but then when someone does that it turns a lot of people away from answering because its difficult to read. A good idea would be to limit what shows on the Main or New Arrivals page, and then show the full question for people to answer.
