People need to believe in higher powers, fate, etc... because without that it is hard to cope with the reality of existance. The true way to enlightenment is to get past the fears and embrace the concept of nothingness and meaninglessness.
It is quite a hard concept to get round, that everything is just a load of random stuff, and ultimatly doesn't matter, seeing as it matters to us. It's far easier to believe that everything is meant to happen. It also helps to get over grief etc.
Its belief that can help, visualising and faith assist dreams to come to fruition.
I think its something you need to genuinely follow blindly to feel the benefit. I think most people understand its fairly easily deduced and therefore can not have blind faith.
