My male cat, neutered over 3 years ago, emits this foul smelling odor once or twice a year from his back end. It does not smell like ammonia, words can't describe how terrible the odor is. What is this awful smell?

If the smell is pungent and a bit fishy I'd say you cat has emptied its anal sacks. Usually done in great fear. Bit like a skunk.

Hello.My experience with cats as they get older their personal care on hyegine reduces. They become senile especially the male cat and tend to urinate everywhere.Not surprising if their odour is unpleasant from time to time.The awfull smell could be from the accumulated discharge which turns dry.To be certain check with your vet.TQ

It absolutely could be a grooming issue, but my guess is anal sacs. The anal sacs/glands secrete a funky odor when they are full and are not emptying themselves properly. They are small sacs on the left and right insides of the anus. Sometimes passing stool doesn't express them and they become clogged, consequently becoming itchy and irritating to your pet which may result in licking, chewing, biting and "scooting" on the carpet. Cats don't usually have anal gland issues, but I have seen it before. You can learn how to express them at home, but most owners are extremely uncomfortable with this process. It is a very common procedure at vets and they won't think you're crazy if you call and ask to have them expressed. Your cat will thank you!!
