Why on an gaming controllers are the four lettered buttons a. b. x and y? why not a, b, c, d or a, b, y, z?

    Not all controllers that that scheme. Like Playstation controllers have an X, square, O, and A. Wii motes have only the A and B button. Gamecube/classic controllers have A,B,y,x, and z as well as the C stick.

    My theory why they made it this way, was because A and B are usually always the attack buttons/selection buttons. Since they are used first, they are A and B. The y and x buttons are more used for jumping or for secondary combos. Hence, the are later down in the alphabet. Or, at least in the case of the Xbox, they wanted an X button to be one of the primary buttons.
