I am working in Photoshop 7, and have a layer with a photo on it, with effects and a mask. Why can't I select the "Artistic" filter? It is not highlighted so that I can click on it. Please help. Thank you.

Hmmmm... It might not work on vector based images, try flattening your image ( layer->flatten image ) you will loose your layers (not your effects though) so you may want to save before trying it. good luck :)

Some reasons a filter might not work on a layer: 1. The image is in CMYK mode. Some filters will not be available unless you go to Image>Mode and choose RGB mode. 2. The layer is a text layer, or a placed vector image. If this is the case, MAKE A COPY of the layer first, rasterize the copied layer, and hide the original layer in case you need to re-edit it later on. You should be able to use filters on any rasterized layer, provided the image is in RGB mode.
