Why do so many websites require you to select your gender when you are registering? If I want to download something, what difference does it make if I'm male of female!?

lol :) It's the reason why I didn't indicate my gender here on AB. What would be the effect of that on how I conduct myself here? We use our hands and our brains to post content, not our genitals. But I guess one reason is that it's a marketing tool. If you're male, you will probably receive notifications about Viagra or penile enlargements, for example. It's just my opinion though. Excellent question! EDIT: BTW, how would they know anyway if we're telling the truth? We can always put MALE even if we're female, or FEMALE even if we're male.

It's just marketing. They want to know more about who uses their product. If they find that a majority of one gender over the other uses their product, then that effects how they will market their product later on. Maybe if a whole bunch of men use it then they will buy an ad on NFL.com or what ever. Or if women use it more, then they will buy ads or make commercials that appeal to women like soap operas or something. Now these examples are sterotypes, but it's just the general idea of what they're doing.

I'm sure it has to do with marketing and whatnot. Seeing where the "target market" should be .. or how well they reached the target market with the current efforts.
