I have used several types of mufflers to solve this problem. You just need to ensure you do not restrict the exhaust flow too much. Another muffler similar to the one you have can be piggy backed or another small to large muffler may be fitted with satisfactory results. If you do not have the proper tools you can enlist the help of a local lawn mower repair shop to make the adaptation.
    Good luck, Jack

You can use a small automotive muffler on your Briggs with no ill effects. Any muffler shop should be able to help you, or you can buy your own parts, but some welding may be required to adapt the muffler to the engine.
