That depends upon what you mean by "take" and what you mean by "hold". If you simply mean they take it after you hold it out, look at it, and then hand it back...well, anyone can do that. If you are carded or need to show ID, that happens all the time. If it is against your will, the courts can order you to surrender your license. If necessary, a police officer or officer of the court would remove it from you. I don't know that a police officer can take and hold your license without either probable cause or a search warrant. That would be a good issue for JohnPennington to clear up...if he's still out here... I do remember something about driver's licenses being considered the property of the state, but that was a long time ago in another state. Outside of the US, I have no idea.
