Question

Help answer this question below.

There is a bird in my wall, he chirps on one side of the room and then the other, it's driving me crazy, any suggestions? We can't find any opening that he could have go through. He wants out, but how. I can't tear the walls apart.

It is not physically possible for a bird to move laterally within the walls. The same piece of wood holds up the inside and outside walls meaning that every 14 1/2 inches is another completely solid barrier inside the wall horizontally.

The bird must be in the attic or outside.

We have a starling nest in our roof (which I must remove). A chick fell into the wall cavity and chirped there for 24 hours. Eventually we located it by watching other starlings bringing food to an airbrick on the outside. Chopped a hole in the brick and supplied a piece of bread. The mother grabbed some of the bread and jumped into the hole to feed the chick. It will leave in a week or two when it's ready to fly. In the meantime, I cover the hole at night in case of rats. Replacing the broken brick is easy and cheap.

Birds CAN get into the wall! All it would take is a hole in the top plate (the framing of your house). I know because i just cut – with a razorknife – a five inch square of sheetrock out of my wall – about a foot from the floor. Alas a brown bird was set free. He was nesting in eve of the house, somehow ended up trapped in the wall – flailing and flapping helplessly.

The piece of sheetrock I cut out I will put back in by screwing some wood behind the opening of the hole to provide backing for the five inch square piece that I will also screw in place. Then simply apply 'all purpose' drywall mud and tape to fill. Sand, prime and paint.

The alternative is waiting for the bird to rot in the wall and HOPE it doesnt stink. DO remember to find the hole in your eves outside and fill those too – preventing the whole problemo again.
