  • I have never heard of black skin disease, but I do know that a dog's skin will turn black as a reaction to severe allergy related trauma, or other skin related traumas. For instance, an allergy to flea bites, untreated ear infections, parasites (like mange), urine burn, etc...Talk with your vet and analyze your pets surroundings. I took in a dog with black skin temporarily. She had a severe untreated ear infections and severe allergies to fleas. We kept her clean and indoors, treated her ears and over about six months to a year, most of her skin went back to being pink. Hope this helps... MMcKee

  • My chow chow mix has this. It started about 3 yrs ago when we moved. She started to loose her hair on her tail, then up her back. She would get black skin on her neck and tummy. We took her to the vet where after several tests was told its called black skin disease. We were told to use dawn soap to wash her at least once a week. Then I could use baby oil to keep her skin soft or give her vitamin E tablets. We do the E tablets but it really doesnt help a lot. She is healthy other then the loss of hair and the skin being black. She seems to be a happy dog all in all.

  • I have a dog with this problem; that's why I am researching now. From the research that I have done so far, this seems to be a symptom of flea allergies. I am going to try the olive oil idea that is posted earlier on this page. I also have heard a lot lately about Dawn dish liquid being good for an animals skin and controlling fleas. I have purchased a bottle with the animals displayed on the front. I am going to try it and I will post my results.
