No -- you shouldn't shift down on an automatic to improve fuel economy. RPM's mean the same thing in both an automatic car and a manual car -- the number of times per minute the engine is spinning. In general, in both types of cars, the lower the RPM the better your gas mileage. In an automatic transmission car, the transmission will almost always pick the best gear for fuel economy while cruising. You should usually only manually select a gear to keep the car from speeding up too much on a very long downhill or for other unusual circumstances.
