Question

Help answer this question below.

Why are most online chat rooms and message boards so cliquey? The real communication goes on between 8 or 10 "core" members, usually the earliest ones to have joined and they tend to ignore new members and their comments or insult them.

The phenomenon of naturally forming groups of 8 or so people is actually quite a widespread one. Larger groups mean it's harder to maintain a fully connected social group, and smaller ones lack momentum.

I don't know if there's a proper psychological term for it, but you can keep an eye on many places and situations where people gather together, and groups of that size seem to just naturally form.

I am a racing fan and I used to go on AOL's motorsports chat rooms, but if you were a fan of certain drivers/teams, you got bashed. I got sick of it. Now if I want to talk racing, I go on racing-specific websites. BTW, I'm an NHRA fan and my driver is John Force.

Because talking shit on the internet is an outlet for angry, 14 year old boys, who are more then likely struggling with their sexual orientation and ability to socialize and interact in the real world. They are more then likely dealing with their own insecurities. It's basically an outlet, because it has no consequences. Where as, in the real world, someone would just punch them in the face. =)
