- You certainly do!! I'm very envious! However, I grew up on a farm where my grandparents had more than an acre of garden and I used to help spray the green beans, flies, etc., with DDT!!!!!! It smelled good too! My grandpa would have a fit if he saw me pumping the fly spray!

I would definitely pay more for humanely raised animals. I detest the way animals are so often mistreated.

Many people would be willing. Few would be able. It's probably not a good time to ask people to pay more for anything. Having said that, I don't know when a good time would be.

Some isn't more expensive. We hunt, that is(for us) cheaper and organic. We also raise our own meat so that we know where it comes from. Unfortunatly some ppl that like to argue these points and then don't realize what they are eating at resteraunts and from grocery stores. It would make them sick if they knew the truth.

I don't know. It seems almost crueler to treat them so nicely, lull them into a sense of security and well being..then ZAP..they're dinner. I am not, in any shape, form or fashion condoning animal abuse..it was just a thought.

YES.

I find the treatment of animals who are cooped-up, injected with hormones, treated horribly, and fed awful food, live in their own filth and the filth of the others they live with, to be inhumane.

And if that's not reason enough, not only does organic meat taste better, it's healthier for you. Those hormones that many animals are pumped full of do make it into your food that you buy at the grocery, especially when it comes to milk. And hormones are extremely effective at very small amounts - kind of like the problems that fish are facing from the seeping of estrogen into their habitats from excesses in human birth control.

- Totally agree with you. However, perhaps you just mispoke, but I want to caution you and any readers that "Organic" is great, but it doesn't necessarily mean humanely raised. If it doesn't say it's humanely raised, then it isn't.

Vegetarian chiming in. Why is it called beef and not cow, pork and not pig?

That said (not preaching), for those who do eat meat, I would hope that all animals that are used for food would be treated in a decent manner and their lives taken quickly and with the least pain.

- Being a country girl, you understand and respect the taking of life for food I am guessing. I personally don't eat meat because I hate the taste of it. As long as a person has respect for life, they can eat meat all they want as long as they understand that it was a living animal. There are too many people that think of meat as something that shows up at the store wrapped in plastic.

- Totally agree, and yes we respect what we kill and eat. I don't enjoy a lot of meats, but my whole family does, so we always use what we get. As I mentioned in my answer to this question some ppl don't realize what is in the meat they are eating from restaraunts and grocery stores. If they did they would puke. It is very sad to think of what these animals had to go through in life only to be shoot in the head and distributed to outside buyers. it is sick.

I am and I do, when my budget allows.

I try to opt for organic and/or free range whenever possible... but when money's tight I just have to feel guilty. Alas.

Yes and we do. Typically the humanely treat animals will also lack the chemicals that aren't good for you to eat. So not only is it humane, its healthy as well. We dont skimp on food in our home. Always buy the good stuff and pay attention to what we eat.

I am and I have. We used to raise all our own meat because we felt so strongly about this. It was organic, safer, and a more respectful way for us to have meat.

I would,if I ate meat.These animals are fed properly without chemicals and injections.The chickens are allowed to roam free.In other words like farmers used to do until corporations took over the farms and ruined everything.

No. Price is more important than how it's raised. So long as it passes inspection, the cheapest one is the one I buy.

- Not that different if you're only buying for yourself; however, if for a family, it does get pricey. If you have a little room on a patio or in your back yard, you could set out a couple of tomato plants. ALL THE DIFFERENCE in the world in home grown tomatos and ones purchased at the market.

- Too many cats in the neighbourhood pissing and pooping in the garden. That's why we got rid of the herbs.
  There's an organic butcher shop here. I don't make a lot of money and can rarely afford to shop there. It's about double the price for sausage there compared to the normal supermarket.

- That's too bad. When no other customers were in, have you ever asked if he could lower the price a little on a pound of . . . say sausage? What's the worst thing that can happen? He'll say, "No." Always the possibility he might say, "Well, what did you have in mind?" Then be ready to tell him what you can pay, but make it a little less than what you actually will pay, because he may try to bump you a little. DOES NOT HURT TO ASK.

Sure I would. I don't eat beef or pork, but I do eat chicken and turkey. I always try to buy the humane stuff.

I do when I can get it. I buy from local farmers at the Farmer's markets Spring-fall. Harder to get in the winter months.

- I grew up on a farm and my gramma canned everything. In the winter, we pretty much had meat and potatos and whatever vegetables she had canned. She even canned beef and sausage patties. We never had lettuce or tomatos in the winter.

I find the idea of 'humanely' raised animals strange. Imagine putting little nappies on them, dressing them, sending them off to school for the first time...!

So no I absolutely do not think we should even have 'humanely raised' meat, let alone pay more for it!

I think most people would be willing to pay more for meat from well treated animals, but that isn't to say that they necessarily can. I'm a student I see plenty of fridges filled with cheap meat. It's not just meat, I myself try not to buy battery eggs, but when money gets tight I will. It comes down to looking after number one.
