Well, yes and no. The institution itself has said many horrible things about LGBT people, including a Doctrine of the Faith letter written by Ratzinger (yes, the current pope) describing LGBT people as "intrinsically evil." However, there are many Catholics that are wonderfully open and inviting to people of all sorts as individuals. I used to be a member of Dignity, which is an organization of LGBT Catholics. This group is welcomed openly by many congregations. Good question! +3

The Catholic church is EXTREMELY homophobic! Yes, Dignity exists which is a support group for gay Roman Catholics (I'm a member), but Dignity is not official, and they were EXPELLED from church premises by Ratzinger (before Benedict XVI became pope). Because of this, Dignity has to meet inside churches of other denominations, usually inside Episcopal churches. I will say one thing. Some people don't get as upset about it as I do, but it enrages and sickens me that the Catholic church is so intolerant of the LGBT community. It's insensitive and unchristian. The first poster was correct when he or she wrote that Ratzinger called homosexuality "intrinsically evil." The entire 1986 "halloween letter" by Ratzinger was vile, despicable, and hate filled. The current catechism statement is not much better. If priests would go out and support Dignity, I would not be so bitter, but I guarantee you that if somebody asked his or her parish priest to say a mass for Dignity, the answer would be no. The priests are not even permitted to think for themselves, because if they say or do something that is contrary to the church doctrine, THEY are the ones who risk getting into trouble if somebody squeals. Yes, the catholic church is VIRULENTLY homophobic. It's very sad.
