My son who is 5 has ADD, I come from a country where teachers are not quite educated in handling ADD kids. I worry for him for when he starts regular school. Does anyone out there have ADD kids enrolled in regular schools or are there alternatives?

If it makes you feel any better, my boyfriend has ADHD and he graduated from a regular high school last year. He goes to a regular college now.

Speak with your childs principle, to set up a meeting, to discuss, your concerns, and have them, set up an I.E.P. (Individualized Education Program) for your son. Basically it is a contract, that you, your child, doctors, teachers, anyone involved with your child, will, come up with procedures, and special circumstances, for his own special needs.

The purpose of this guidance is to assist educators, parents, and state and local educational agencies in implementing the requirements of Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regarding Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for children with disabilities, including preschool-aged children. (This guide does not address the development of Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) for infants and toddlers.)

We find out tomorrow if my son has ADHD or Asperger's, but we've been dealing with him and school for five years, so I know your fear.

Is your son on any medication? Have you thought about the Feingold Diet? I have found with my son, the dyes and preservatives really impact on his behavior.

You will have to be your son's biggest fighter. Don't let the school or the teachers bully you or your son. Read up on the issues with ADD, educate the school yourself, and make them do their jobs. If there is a formal diagnoses, take it to the school and see if they have a program for special needs children. We have something called an IEP, and by law they have to follow that plan, which could be anything from a special class to counseling once a week. My son had a special ed teacher come to his school twice a week and work with him so he could learn to sit still and follow the rules.

Read up on all you can, gather information to take to the school, request meetings with the teacher, principal, and counselors. I highly suggest the Feingold Diet for everyone. I know I've felt better since cutting out the icky stuff in my diet, and we have proof from the school that the diet has worked for my son. His grades and behavior has improved and the teacher noted it.

It's a long, hard road for both you and your son, and I wish you all the best. Research all you can and arm yourself with information. Fight for him. You're his mother and you know best. Good luck!
