Some think it's good, others think it stinks. Personally, I wonder if it's so good, why are so many Canadians crossing the border to see doctors (but having their prescriptions filled at home)?

To be honest, as an Aussie, I don't think about it at all. Is there something special about it that I should know about?

Well it's free, but not always accessible. Medical practitioners over here are fed up of being underpaid, and this causes some major problems for accessibility, shortage of staff and sometimes even competence. A lot of places run with crap material as well, so while I'm glad that it is free, it obviously has its price to pay.

Last year, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I was sent to the BC Cancer Centre which is a complex of two six story building in the huge Vancouver General Hospital complex. Everything you need is there, labs, therapy, doctors, etc. Volunteers are there to show you around on your first visit. I could have had my surgery within 6 weeks but waited as there was no rush. My surgeon, doctors, everything was first class all the way. It didn't cost me a dime. My wife is American and could never get anything like that without a gold plated health care plan. Our system isn't perfect but ask just about any Canadian if they would trade even for the American system and the answer would be a great big NO!!! My wife is American so I know a bit about what she has gone through. No a pretty sight.

The problem with the Canadian system is the concept western medicine is founded on does not work. Symptomology is waste of time and money. Prevention and proper exercise, diet and attitude are the solution to 90% of what ails people, pills are not the answer.

For a start its not free, you have to pay a monthly premium. I dont know why everyone keeps saying its free because its not. You pay it in your taxes as well as a monthly premium for myself and my Husband its like $100 a month. I have lived and worked in the UK as well and they do have a free healthcare system its called the NHS. Its paid for only by taxes. You have to pay for your prescriptions though unless you dont have the money. Plus to try and stop unwanted pregnancies the birth control pill is free for any woman who needs it. But to be fare the Canadian system is better than the US one.

If we had it here the U.S. might rise in health status over the world from 27th to at least third, which is where Canada is. We are first in cost and 27th in results. Our system is not the best.

ABC's 20/20 ran a story about the Canadian system just last Thursday night. Their story states that there is an average wait of 23 hours to see a Dr. Some surgeries could wait 6 months, but the average is 3 months and any more patients are coming to the U.S. than Canada will admit to. But there is a very prompt and no wait health care system. You just have to bark or meow. A pet can get an MRI in 6 hours. I know the difference is in the paying. ABC doesn't seem to have a conservative bias. Quite the opposite. They are considered quite liberal.
