  • In between fighting fires, which is very hard work, not to mention dangerous, they like to take it easy. Can you blame them?
  • My firefighter friend says it's a hurry up and wait kind of job. You'll sit around for 3 hours and bust your butt for an hour and then sit around again. For the most part, once the equipment is set up and you've done your bit around the fire house, you get to play cards. Oh, and I forgot about the risk your life to save others thing. They do that as well.
  • Think of it like this; every time technology changes, we have to train on it. Construction, airbags, fuels, buildings, everything that is made burns a certain way and we have to know about it. Sometimes water will get us killed and we need to know it. Durring out 24hrs on duty, we have a normal 8 hour work day. We begin checking our trucks making sure absolutely everything is ready to go. Then we clean the station just like its home. We have to meet a certain number of training hours in numerous categories. We have to measure the flow of hydrants, maintain hydrants, fire truck maintenance, tool maintenance, driver training, pre-fire plans, public relation activities, training with other departments so we can work together effectively. We like to eat lunch at some point. And then we still have to run the medical calls, car accidents, car fires, house fires, and hazardous material incidents. We also take classes towards specialties or college degrees in Fire Science, Administration, Public Affairs, Emergency Medicine and so on. I wouldn't trade it for anything
  • Firefighters sometimes have a lot of down time. during their shift, they live in a firehall, waiting to respond. They do cook food and sleep there. Firefighters, like the police, are first responders. this means they are on alert for any call. to do this, firefighters live and sleep in their firehalls. the police do not have this choice. their police vehicle is their home and office on wheels. What if these emergency people were not "at the ready", if your house caught fire? The firefighters and police earn their pay. Its not all emergency calls. its tough psychologically as well, to just sit around and wait for a fire or police call. Its not a bed of roses job.
