{Notes taken from my AQA Anthology for my 2008 GCSE English Literature}:

This is a dramatic monologue performed by Ulysses (aka Odysseus, king of Ithaca).
1st stanza : he is bored of the life he is living (old wife, savage race)
2nd stanza : he is going to live life to the max; wants to die a hero's death in a blaze of glory; he senses that there is upcoming death but still endeavors to seize the day.
3rd stanza : talks about his son, Telemachus, and how he will pass on his responsibilities to him; he notes how he believes his son will have a better chance of improving his people than he did.
4th stanza : again the notion of upcoming death - Ulysses knows he is going to die and realizes this.

N.B. This poem was written in IAMBIC PENTAMETER to give it a natural sound which complements the idea of Ulysses talking.

    Hope this helps.
