  • That is the answer that people from both cities have been fighting over for the last 100 years. I am a Sydney sider, but have lived in Melbourne. I think Sydney is a prettier city, and has better weather, but Melbourne has a better transport system, and the most wonderful atmosphere. There is all this cafe culture and the arts.
  • Hollering from Melbourne, I'd say Sydney has more international tourist-y appeal. Whereas, Melbourne has the artsy culture down pat. There's always some kind of festival or expo.
  • No doubt Sydney has a pretty harbour - but Melbourne is a better place to live. Easier to get around, stuffed full of events and galleries, more cafe's than you can poke a (bread)stick at and a great grafitti culture...
  • You have asked a question that no doubt will cause a lot of fighting between Sydneysiders and Melbournians. There is an ongoing rivalry between the two groups. I am from Sydney and I love it. I have visited Melbourne and it has great shops and cafes. But for beauty Sydney has it all. The harbour, beaches, the weather, the events, the markets. I found Melbourne to be quite plain and not very easy to get around.
  • Melbourne is the indoor city where Sydney is outdoors, in saying that, I prefer Sydney but love to visit Melbourne...
