  • At one time way back when we required a permit to own a radio, don't think so with the tv.
  • I live in Canada...no, no licence fee. We have a few basic channels which are free....and then we have the option of purchasing a cable network or a satelite service to provide us with 100's of options for viewing.
  • If we had an antennae(sp?) we could get 3-4 local stations for free, but many times they would be snowy, if they even came in at all. Sometimes at night, we could get clearer signals. Back then, you also had to have a license for a CB radio... Dad had two call signals - personal was KRK1209 and business was KBP6521. I don't know if you STILL need to get a license for CBs, but since you ARE broadcasting, it MIGHT be necessary. For TV, then they added cable, and "free" went by the wayside. To get all 12 channels (some local, some a little further away) it cost a few bucks. They kept adding on. Next Feb, 2009, all TVs in the US are to be digital. If you're on cable, you should be ok. If you still use an antennae (rabbit ears or outside), you will need a converter box. Apparently, they will use the current TV channel frequencies for protective services and the like. I've never heard of a license for either radio or TV unless you were broadcasting.
  • The bbc licence fee is the biggest ripoff going. I asked if you didn`t own a tv did you have to pay. And someone said you had to pay if you went on their internet website or listened to bbc radio. The bbc is a load of tosh anyways, and most of the people affiliated with them are grossly overpaid, such as Jonathan Ross.
  • You do not need a liscense to own a TV in the states. But of course you do have a monthly bill with some sort of cable or satillite provider. Usually the more you pay the more channels you recieve. You probably have that too along with the liscense. Do you have to tape it to your TV or what?
  • We pay, just not to the Gov't. It goes to Time-Warner in our case.
  • To watch tv where I live we have to sign a 2 year commitment with one of the 2 main satellite providers.
  • i think we should have the option of paying the licence fee and getting bbc or not paying and not getting bbc.the fee is only for bbc so if you don't watch bbc why should you need a licence.the other channels make money through advertising.
  • We have to pay for cable or satellite service (US). BTW...NOTHING is free here.
