  • I am a black woman. I occaisionall have straight hair (although I am wearing it "natural" now and have been for about 10 months.) Although I am not a stylist, I will tell you what I know. There are many ways that black women go about having straight hair: more and more techniques are developed with time. Some black women are BORN with staight hair, believe it or not. Genetic anomolies perhaps added with the complex racial diversity of African American history. For instance, my own hair is straight-ish, i.e., it doesn't take much to make it "behave." My great-great grandfather (or is it one more great, I can't remember now) was the West Virginian slave holder of my maternal relative. So perhaps some of my straighness came from there. Some black women, either professionally or at home "mechanically" straighten their hair. That means that without changing the chemical composition of their hair, they use heat to straighten it. This is done by either hot comb (a metal comb heated over either fire or by an appliance plugged into the wall) or by a really hot dryer and continual combing while the hair straightens under the heat. Black wome are famous for "blowing out" dryers. Dryers aren't made to stay on as long as it often takes to straighten our hair. And finally, some women "chemically" straighten their hair by what we call a "relaxer" and what white women call a "perm." Ironically, although few people know this...these are the same exact chemicals, but we use them to straighten and whites use it to curl. From what I understand about the "relaxing" process is that it breaks down the outter cuticle of the hair and makes it hold in place the way it is set. That's why if you watch a black woman getting a relaxer, the hair stylist slathers the stinky chemicals on her hair and then keeps it straight for (like) 20 mins. If a white woman gets a "perm," the stylists slathers and then ROLLS the hair. Because the two types of women are using the same chemicals toward different ends. Just like white women can perm at home, we can buy relaxer kits to do at home as well.
  • Gene therapy?
  • They straighten it.
  • They most likely do not have African Ancestry which can be seen in southern India where a lot of the people there are quite black and have straight hair. It's merely genetics. http://www.webindia123.com/india/people/people.htm
  • Why whats the point in this question what its not known to be black and have straight hair?
  • Kinky or wiry hair is caused by two possible problems. One, a lack of essential vitamins and minerals or two, a bacterial infection easily cured by antibiotics.
