  • I don't know the three states, but two would have to be Alaska and California. Alaska would be number one. It has the highest mountain in North America. Mount McKinley rises to an altitude of 20,320 ft. Alaska's lowest point is right on the coast at sea level. So, it has a total vertical relief of 20,320 ft. California would be second. At 14,505, Mount Whitney is the tallest mountain in the contiguous 48 States. California also has the lowest point in North American at 282 ft below sea level (Badwater, Death Valley). So, California has the second highest total vertical relief at 14,787 ft. As I wrote, I have no idea what the third state would be, but I would suspect that it would be one of the ones along the East Coast.
  • State : High Point - Low Point = Change Alaska : 20321 FT - 0 FT = 20,321 FT Change California : 14505 FT - -282FT = 14787 Change Washington : 14410 FT - 0 FT = 14410 FT Change Full list is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_elevation#Listed_by_elevation_difference
  • Actually, Alaska has 7 of 10 of the highest mountains in the country. YEP, we're cool!
