Why is 10-key so important in the workplace? Why can't they just use the numbers on the top of the keyboard like everyone else?

Because an accountant can easily type the numbers out with one hand on the 10 key, vice having to maneuver around on the keyboard to find all 10. This is the reason, also, that there is usually a raised piece on the 5 key, similar to the J and F. It's the home key for that pad.
