Can you write yourself a cheque (stating CASH on it), take it to the bank and get that cash immediately (because your debit card has a cheque guarantee on it) - even if you don't have the funds in your account? I'm in the UK/England.

At least in the US you can certainly write a check (or cheque) to cash and cash it. If you don't have a debit card that is the only way to get cash (at some banks). However, if the funds are not in the account then no, you can't cash it unless you have some kind of overdraft protection like a line of credit attached to the account. Writing a check with no funds nor OD protection to a store or non-bank establishment will result in a bounced check and further fees. Not fun.
