If someone is paralyzed from the neck down, how do they stay thin? They can eat, but they can't exercise any of the food off.

    My guess is that it's simple mathematics. They are fed (or allowed to eat) no more calories than they burn. Calories are burned even when "resting", or even sleeping, so as long as they don't exceed that calorie count they should stay status quo. (even a couch potatoe burns calories, the brain uses very little, but the other organs burn a lot of calories...exercise actually burns very few calories...one jelly donut might equal a 3 mile brisk walk). That's my opinion.

    metabolism is regulated by your hormones and organs-the liver, pancrease, thyroid, adrenal and so on must function. if all is normal, but person is just paralyzed, what the other person says is true. if not, and there is an imbalance, then they will gain weight. unfortunately you can't look at someone and know whether they are eating more calories than burning. that works sometimes. but not a good general rule
