You'd probably just get a ticket and a firm warning. I doubt anything more than that. The State Troopers will come down on you harder than the state police.
Most likely a ticket or impoundment of your vehicle or both, you also maybe be arrested.

There is no separate State Troopers or State Police in Virginia. They are the exact same thing. It is the Virginia State Police and their officers are "Troopers"

The state troopers still come down on you harder than the state police.

How can they? They are the same thing. A Trooper is a State Police Officer. The Troopers enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and other local and federal laws. State Troopers are employees of the Virginia State Police. For the State Police the word trooper only means officer. What you are saying is like saying that a Richmond Police Officer would come down harder on you than the Richmond Police Department.

I've lived here since I was 12. When I learned to drive, it was just the general word of mouth that a trooper is going to be more intense to deal with than just the standard officer. Admittedly, I never knew the distinction. But again and again, my friends expressed having more issues with troopers and less of a chance of "getting off" the ticket when it came to a trooper. The troopers do have a reputation of being the "big guns" in a way. Of course, I can't prove this -- just is what I've experienced personally. Are you a Virginian, too?

This is coming from someone that is friends with several troopers and lived in VA all my life. There is absolutly no difference in a State Trooper and the State Police. Maybe you mean a State Trooper is going to be harder on you than a local officer. Then yes in many cases that is true, but not always, it all depends on the officer, and what type of day he/she is having. Many times for a traffic offense a trooper is going to be harder than a local because a troopers primary (not only) job is traffic.

A little more... Not trying to argue with you. I am just trying to inform you. Reading back you said a trooper would be more intense than a standard officer. A standard officer is a local officer and a trooper is an officer for the State Police. Trooper is simply another name for officer.

Yes, I was definitely meaning that it has become sort of public knowledge that troopers tend to be less likely to go back on a ticket than an officer.

Well legally speaking once a Trooper writes a ticket he can't rip it up. I have a friend who is a vol. firefighter and he got a ticket from a trooper. The trooper saw his FF badge when he was putting his license up and the trooper said I wish you would have showed me that, I wouldn't have wrote this, but now I have to turn it in. Troopers have to turn all tickets in, if its a mistake I am sure they could "void" it but there better be another one for the same stop on the next page.

WOW! Well, that explains a lot... interesting. Thanks for sharing. Are you still in VA?
