Monroe was found dead in the bedroom of her Brentwood, California home by her housekeeper Eunice Murray on August 5, 1962. She was 36 years old. Her death was ruled as an overdose from the sleeping pill Nembutal. Several conspiracy theories have surfaced in the decades after her death, some involving President John F. Kennedy. There is also speculation that her death was accidential, but the official cause of death was "probable suicide" by acute barbiturate poisoning. On August 8, 1962, Monroe was buried at Corridor of Memories, #24, at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Allegedly, this was the day she had planned to remarry DiMaggio. Lee Strasberg delivered the eulogy.

Most evidence suggests that it was an accidental overdose which she intended as a "cry for help". She certainly spent most of her life suffering from extreme depressive states and had attempted suicide by overdose before, being discovered and saved by her roomate. In the days leading up to her suicide she neglected to tell her doctor that she had already been given a Nembutal (the drug that killed her) prescription by her psychiatrist, knowing that he would give her extras- hinting at extreme drugs dependency, a disregard for her own safety, and possible suicide plan. A notoriously "needy" person, the previous night she had been in an emotional state and made repeated demands for friends and doctors to stay with her- all were ultimately too busy- one thery is that she took an overdose hoping that the housekeeper would discover her and the doctor would be forced to return. Shortly before death she took a phonecall from her friend Peter Lawford which finished with her saying: "say goodbye to Pat. Say goodbye to Jack. Say goodbye to yourself because you're a nice guy." from looking at her life history and what we know about her last few days, it certainly looks highly probable that the overdose was intentional- whether it was intended to actually kill her is more difficult to say. Carmella wrote: Great answer, you would have thought that Peter Lawford would have realised what she was about to do though. Apparently he did twig that something was wrong and called several people asking them to check up on her. Unfortunately nobody arrived until it was already too late.

There are still a lot of speculations about Marilyn Monroe's mysterious and premature demise, and many of the events surrounding that 4th August, 1962 remain a mystery to this day. Monroe's death was ruled 'a probable suicide', drug overdose of Nembutal and Chloral Hydrate; however, transcripts of apparent conversations between the actress and her psychiatrist have shed new light on her state of mind before she died, the transcript indicate that Monroe was not suicidal, and was actually making plans for her future, including a remarriage to Joe DiMaggio -- Also, she died, apparently, of a rectally administered barbiturate enema (source: http://crimelibrary.com) which, if true, could not have been administered by herself. Among some of the oddities surrounding Marilyn's death, an alternative theory suggests that certain organized crime leaders, killed Monroe in order to frame the Kennedys for her death. None of the proponents of these theories have uncovered enough evidence to make a credible newspaper story, let alone a legal case. Whatever can be said about that night of 4th August 1962, there was most definitely a cover-up of some kind.

I think she was 'knocked off'....

In my opinion, not suicide. Who might have done it required forensics far beyond those in existence at the time....besides, the candidates could have formed a queue. There were certainly enough people who wanted to shut her up. She was a liability by that stage...often drugged, often unwise in her words and actions.

The cause of Marilyn Monroe's death was officially listed as suicide by barbiturate overdose, but there are many theories ranging from an accident to murder, and a number of forensic experts have discarded the suicide theory -- I believe that Miss Monroe did not intentionally kill herself. Since her death, a number of investigators have asserted that she did not commit suicide but was the victim of murder. However, there is no concrete evidence to support this theory -- There are just too many questions surrounding her untimly death, too much evidence has been tampered with or 'lost'. Some people have changed their story a million times, and It is alleged that someobody removed a diary and an incriminating note from Monroe's home. The actual events that surrounded Monroe's death will probably never be known. What was known for certain was that a living legend mysteriously died before her time, in a mist of confusion, scandal and uncertainty.

Ultimately her death was, I believe...a suicide. It wasn't accidental..her intentions I think were very clear and she had tried it at least once before. There are a lot of murder theories. She may have ben a women who new too much but suicide is what I believe took her in the end. A real shame to.

I wasn't alive but fom what i heard it sounds like accidental overdose

There was a good chance she was removed. She had a very big ego problem and it became a problem for JFK and his brother Bobby who both were doing her. She got just a little too big for her britches.
