It's an interesting question about how things work. Do the convicted go to prison right away? Can they manage their property from prison? Is there anyway to preserve what they have? I do not know.
I think all of the inmates personal possesions will get turned over to his family. until he gets released
If someone does not gather it and save it for them it is all gone by the time they get out
In PA, the personal property is all turned over to the state, some of it is used to pay restitution to any victims and the rest is supposed to go to support the prison system.
I would imagine they would have time to make arrangements with friends or family.
house would get foreclosed, pets impounded and car would probably get impounded as well!

what is a strip search like in jail? Is it humiliating to have to go through? Also are you tranported from court in chains?
