Why do we sing "Rock a bye baby" to help babies sleep, when the song is about putting a baby on a tree and letting the wind crash the baby to the ground that would instantly kill the baby

    They don't know. Long nights with my son would find me reading the newspaper in a sing-song voice and he would coo and go to sleep.

    Why do we sing "Ring Around the Rosie" when it's about the bubonic plague (A pocket full of posie, ashes we all fall down - their bodies were burned. . .)

    And "London Bridge is Falling Down"

    etc.

    Since when do any song's lyrics make sense?

    Usually it's just a way for the kid to hear a parent's voice, which registers as attention.

    Or maybe there are some sleeps one wishes the kid would never wake up from.
