Because babies can't understand the words yet.
They don't know. Long nights with my son would find me reading the newspaper in a sing-song voice and he would coo and go to sleep.
I used to hum it only. Never liked the words. It's a soothing melody.
Most nursery rhymes are macabre when you really listen to them.
This reminds me of the first Simpsons episode ever.
Why do we sing "Ring Around the Rosie" when it's about the bubonic plague (A pocket full of posie, ashes we all fall down - their bodies were burned. . .)
And "London Bridge is Falling Down"
etc.
sad, can't we think of something better?
Since when do any song's lyrics make sense?
Usually it's just a way for the kid to hear a parent's voice, which registers as attention.
Or maybe there are some sleeps one wishes the kid would never wake up from.
For the same reason we watch reality tv. We are morbid beyond belief.
Better than what that keyboard cat has in mind:
All in all you are just another brick in the wall. Hey teacher, do you have anything to teach our young ones at all? Any of you?!
