Has there ever been an electric aircraft built?

    Yes there has, high capacity batteries are making electric motors popular for model airplanes.

    With respect to larger aircraft, I don't think that there have been any practical electric ones built yet. I doubt that batteries would be able to give enough range. However, NASA has been experiment with solar powered planes. These are unmanned, remotely controlled flying wings. One was called HELIOS. It crashed into the Pacific 29 minutes into a shakedown flight. The other is Pathfinder Plus (http://www.nasa.gov/centers/dryden/news/NewsReleases/2005/05-58.html). As far as I know, this plane is still in operation.

    yes the plane used 160 AA bateries making it the worlds 1st household battery-powered take off the plane weighs 44kg had a wing span of 31 meters and was piloted by Tomohiro Kamiya(japan) it flew as high as 5.2 meters and stayed in the air for almost 1 minute and covered a distence of 391 meters.
