When one of my grandmothers died. I was 12.

I was 6 or 7 - it is definitely among my first concrete memories. It probably helped that my parents had me when they were older - especially my father, who was 48 then (my mother was 35 at that time). I always thought, for as long as I can remember, about how I would degenerate, physically and mentally, and eventually die. It upset me as a child, and upsets me now. As a child, I knew that as I grew into an adult, my mental flexibility and creativity would decrease. Knowing now what I do about brain plasticity changes that occur during puberty, there is now experimental evidence of that. I do my best to stay healthy, and physically and mentally fit so that I can stave off degeneration of aging as long as possible. I also am hopeful that advances in biotechnology, nanotechnology, and computer science will lead to breakthroughs in the next few decades that will significantly increase the human healthy lifespan.
