WHOSE definition of "illegal"? ... Conservatives? Liberals? Christians? Muslims? American? British? French? Russian? Catholics? Blacks? Whites? Indians? Straights? Gays? Marrieds? Adults? Kids? Get the idea?
If they blocked everything that everyone in the world found illegal, there would BE no internet, nor reason for Google to exist. BTW: AB would surely be considered illegal for at least SOME of it's content... Should THEY be blocked/banned from Google?
The great thing about the internet is that it is a source of information, independent of any government or organization.
When you have free information you have lots of bad stuff as well as good. But IMV the advantage of a free source of information more than outweighs the disadvantages.
That is why I will always oppose any kind of censorship of the net.
no, they dont. and no, they shouldn't
if they did, that would reduce their profits, so it's not in their best interest
also, corporations should not protect people from themselves. people should protect themselves from themselves
Google does not block any websites, and they shouldn't.
It's important to realize that some things are illegal in some countries, and legal in others.
It's also important to realize that displaying illegal content online can never hurt anyone. Maybe some users' precious sensitive eyes will be offended by some contents, but no one is going to be harmed in any real way. Google simply indexes web pages, it doesn't look at all of them. Even if it could block certain websites, other search engines might not. I'm sure that may child pornography websites have been shut down and the pedophiles running them caught because engines like Good did NOT try to block them (which they would have to do with an automated system). When they can be viewed by everyone, it's in the internet using public worldwide to report it, and with millions of people across the world, the internet maintains a certain minimum level of "cleanness" (where, at the very least, there a minimum of sites that exploits children, which is the best we can hope for).
Yea I think google should block all those illegal sites. Because sometime when we find a link to another pages we are not aware of what we going to find on that link. Could anyone tell me where I can download a filter to block all these illegal sites? so If we click on the link by mistake site can be blocked.
They effing should!!!
As said above sometimes links or searches take you to places you really dont wanna be. With very questionable material on display. Creed and culture aside, some moralities are applicable across the board.
Some things, no one should have access to!!!
Firstly, the No camp come up will irrelevant arguments
1) It's important to realize that some things are illegal in some countries, and legal in others.
True, but a computer connects via an IP address, this IP address can be related to a country and theretofore the blocking of the web sites can be different for users in different country. If for some reason google selects the wrong country (e.g. when using an anonymous proxy server) the user could select which country's rule of legal they want to abide by. - GOOGLE WILL NOT BE STOPING USERS WHO WANT TO VIEW IT, JUST HELPING THOSE WHO DONT
2) WHOSE definition of "illegal"? ... Conservatives? Liberals? Christians? Blacks? Whites?
Again a nonsense answer, legal the the law of the land (the country government where the request for the website originates). Christians may think certain things should be illegal but that just their option and not the law of the land.
3) AB would surely be considered illegal for at least SOME of it's content... Should THEY be blocked/banned from Google?
This may well be true and in the case of AB the answer is no it should not be blocked, but most cases are quite clear and should be blocked, e.g. if it hosts child porn it should be blocked.
So in conclusion google should give you an OPTIONAL setting (not set by default) which asks you to specify which country's regulations you want to abide by, selecting this will filter result removing clear cut cases based on that country's law. Remember just because something is objectionable dosent mean it illegal, so I not saying block adult sites, just block the illegal ones.
