What is the best way to tell without going to the doctor if I have a bad sprain or a broken bone? It's in the wrist/hand area.

    A bad sprain will not result in increased pain when you slowly and steadily push your injured hand or wrist against a stationary object such as a wall or a table. A broken bone will result in increased pain when you do the same thing.

    Broken bones also usually cause a bruise, sprains generally do not. Both are going to swell though due to damage to the tissue. It took 6 weeks for the bruise to go away on my foot after I broke it, it looked horrible.
