Question

Help answer this question below.

Using batteries to make a gadget work that's meant to be powered by a car cigarette lighter? They have 12V so I'll need to link up a 9V and two 1.5V (AA) batteries I think, but will the current be right, and do those plugs have + and - terminals?

what are you trying to run? Need to know the current draw.

Yeah...the tip on the ciggy plug is + and the side contact(s) is -

Also...you can prolly go over 12v since most ciggy sockets are 13-14v when the car is running and devices using them have internal regulators anyway. Heck...chances are good you could run a 6v lantern battery into a 5v regulator and get your device to work if you take it apart and dive in to the circuit...but it sounds like that wouldn't be too good of an idea for you to try at this point.

I don't think that will work man, you should just get a car battery, or a 12v adapter
