How much does it cost to hire a private investigator?

I don't know other than it is not cheap. I can save you a ton of money though. If you want to hire one because you suspect your partner is cheating then she probably is and you should just pick up and leave rather than spending a fortune to just have your fears copnfirmed in the end.

I think it varies on different things:
Your goals
The person who's going to be investigated
The type of investigation services

It varies widely depending on what type of investigation is needed ... around here (Montreal) it ranges from as low as $20.00 per hour to just sit and take a few photos to as high as $1,000.00 per hour plus expenses for a dangerous & covert follow every where and report every thing ...

how much to hire a private investigator you ask? It depends upon what you need them to do. A lot of people assume it's for cheating partner investigations, but in reality they do an awful lot more.

What are you looking to find out? If it's where the person's been and what they are doing it's easy enough to have a friend follow them. You can get creative and do it pretty inexpensively yourself with the help of your friends.

Maybe a little more detail? If you need a private investigator they are out there and some are good. A lot of the stuff can be done on your own. I'm not going into detail because if either ever read this site they'll know it's me. I was my own detective and I found out a lot of stuff (legally I might add). It was only a click away :)

The whole point of hiring a private investigator or detective agency is to pay someone to find out something that you cannot. This may require a set of skills and experience that many people do not have. If it's online information youre needing, then there's no point hiring one.
