The Cold Spring area is beautiful in Upstate NY. Wildwood State Park in Wading River, L.I. is very nice. Also, NJ and Pa have beautiful camp areas. I suggest either Hickory Run State Park (near Berwick, PA), or Knobels Grove, in Elysburg, PA.

For camping in New York, your best bet it to get an Empire Passport for the best prices and most value. See this link for more info: http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/ You can also get a yearly passport for the National Parks. Don't be shy about contacting some private campgrounds, and perhaps purchasing a camping membership if you intend to spend a lot time camping. KOA has very good, resort like camp grounds. Contact your local AAA. I was amazed to find the amenities my AAA membership has gotten me. It practically paid for itself in the help I have received.

Camp only on Long Island, because RV people aren't wanted up here! And make sure you leave all your pets at home because none of you want to obey the law and pick up the animals waste as required! Virtually every park in NY has a sign that says no pets allowed, they should add no RV people as well!
